being raised in a city going outside meant playing with my little brother on the sidewalk outside our house, going to the park meant climbing on a jungle gym down the street, going to the beach meant taking the subway to coney island, and so on. when i was seven my family went upstate to our friend’s country house. it was the first time i had been thrown into a setting like that and i was entirely winded. i wasn’t raised religious and i had never believed in any god, but while rolling down the green hills and running through the long grass i felt a feeling i can only describe as faith. the world around me was suddenly filled with immense godly meaning. i looked up to the sky, i spoke to the trees, i thanked the bugs around me, i smiled at the sun, and i hugged every wave that passed. as i grow older this infatuation has only become stronger and has become religion to me.
